Welcome to Kerry's Kongquest! In this blog, you can ask questions about other cultures that you always wanted to ask but didn't have the guts to. The same goes for people from other countries: if you have been wondering why American people behave in a certain way, post a question. This blog will better your understanding of other cultures and enhance your appreciation for diversity. Enjoy! **One & only rule: after you answer a question, please ask a question!!**
As a male who has been married for 31 years I do not believe that women should change their last names just because they are married. It occurs to me that changing the last name implies that the woman is no longer who she used to be and now becomes the "property" of the male. I feel that women should keep their single name and come up with other ways to indicate that she is married, such a wedding ring? This is a very american (USA) cultural value. In my country women keep their single name but add their husband last name to their last name also.
ReplyDeleteIt is very common for women to change their last names in the U.S.A. I will probably end up changing my last name out of tradition. I do not feel like the name alone implies that the woman is the male's property. I would not marry someone who treated me like I was inferior. I think that the changing of last names is something left over from history.
